Fiction. Marie, Anne, and Floriane are fifteen years old. Anne and Marie have a tender and innocent friendship, but Floriane, who is much more fully grown, will attract the attention of Marie, who is fascinated by this girl, the captain of the synchronized swimming team who is so attractive to teenage boys.
Céline Sciamma was already a name to be remembered in French cinema since her debut in 2007, Water Lilies (Naissance des pieuvres). But since last year, she is definitely a reference among directors in the best European cinema, with the mesmerizing Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019).
With four feature films and a short film directed by her, Sciamma has evidenced a well-defined style of her own since the very beginning, always interested in the bold world of the coming-of-age narrative. Her stories about the search for gender identity in the midst of teenage years are seldom successful when attempted by other directors. But in the movies by Sciamma, she reveals nuances and unknown aspects that bring us new ways to look at our own youth – no matter how far it might be – and think about it, and about the youth surrounding us.
