Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (Portrait of a Lady on Fire)

Portrait de la jeune fille en feu
Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Sinopsis

Fiction. French Brittany, 1770. Marianne is a painter who has to make the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who recently left a convent. Héloise does not accept her fate as a married woman and refuses to sit, thus forcing Marianne to work in secret. To this end, she pretends to be a lady in waiting, so that she can watch her during the day and paint her during the nights. Their relationship becomes deeper as they share Héloise’s last moments of freedom before her wedding.

Céline Sciamma

Céline Sciamma was already a name to be remembered in French cinema since her debut in 2007, Water Lilies (Naissance des pieuvres). But since last year, she is definitely a reference among directors in the best European cinema, with the mesmerizing Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019).

With four feature films and a short film directed by her, Sciamma has evidenced a well-defined style of her own since the very beginning, always interested in the bold world of the coming-of-age narrative. Her stories about the search for gender identity in the midst of teenage years are seldom successful when attempted by other directors. But in the movies by Sciamma, she reveals nuances and unknown aspects that bring us new ways to look at our own youth – no matter how far it might be – and think about it, and about the youth surrounding us.
