La Asfixia
Sinopsis
Documentary. Sometimes, Ana feels a lack of air. Her mother believes it’s because while she was pregnant, there was a moment when she could not breathe. It happened in the afternoon of February 13, 1982, when her father, Emil, was arrested and disappeared —with another 45,000 people— during the internal armed conflict in Guatemala. Now, in the silence and fear that still endure in postwar society, Ana takes a dive into the memory of her relatives and those who knew her father, among memories that have not yet been told, or that are hidden. And also inside the bureaucratic labyrinth, where there is a remote possibility to find his remains and get justice to be done. Asphyxia is a trip among the blurred footprints of memory, away from solemnity, and aware that memory reinvents and forgets. In this endeavor, Ana seeks to create her own images about her father and about what happened to a whole generation that was massacred.
Ana Isabel Bustamante works as an editor in films, video clips, and television series. Asphyxia (2018) is her first feature film. It received three awards of postproduction at the Festival de La Habana and the support from Cinergia for postproduction. It premiered worldwide at the Festival de La Habana. It received the Special Jury Award in FICG, the FIPRESCI Award in IFF Panama, and the Audience Award to Best Foreign Film in BAFICI.
