Varados (Stranded)
Sinopsis
Documentary. In the Mediterranean Sea, the sea where our civilization was born, thousands of refugees wait for Europe to accept them. At the gates of the old world, they struggle to keep hope alive, despite the harsh and uncertain conditions in which they survive. Stranded (Varados) comes closer to the daily life of those long term refugees. In buildings illegally occupied in Athens, or in refugee camps scattered throughout the whole country, these men and women keep on waiting for the official documents that will allow them to go on with their lives.
Helena Taberna started to be a filmmaker in the decade of the 1990’s, writing, directing and producing many short films, both fictions and documentaries. Afterwards, Helena has premiered the feature films Extranjeras (2003) dealing with emigration, La Buena Nueva (2008) on how we remember history and our civil war, Nagore (2010) which suggests a thinking exercise on gender violence, and Acantilado (2016) that delves into the world of fanatic sects. Her cinematic production has received the support of both the audience and the critics, and she has won many international awards. The topics she chooses as the background of her films are shocking and moving for the audience, and generate its empathy.
