Sinopsis
After prostitution is outlawed in Japan, several women working at a nightclub in Tokyo try to change their lives. Through its intertwined stories, the film explores topics of exploitation, survival, and the search for a better life in an environment dominated by darkness and hopelessness.
Kinuyo Tanaka (1909-1977) was an iconic Japanese actress and director, with a career of more than 250 films. After World War II, she became the second woman to direct films in Japan. Tanaka was the director of six films between 1953 and 1962 with which she addressed issues such as colonial experiences or sexuality from a feminist perspective, thus challenging the dominant representations of women in Japanese cinema of the time. In addition to her successful collaboration with Kenji Mizoguchi, she also worked with great filmmakers such as Ozu and Naruse.
