Sinopsis
Based on the memoir of Hiro Saga, the film depicts, from a critical female perspective, the story of a young Japanese aristocrat, forced to marry the prince of Manchuria’s younger brother, at the onset of World War II.
Kinuyo Tanaka (1909-1977) was an iconic Japanese actress and director, with a career of more than 250 films. After World War II, she became the second woman to direct films in Japan. Tanaka was the director of six films between 1953 and 1962 with which she addressed issues such as colonial experiences or sexuality from a feminist perspective, thus challenging the dominant representations of women in Japanese Cinema of the time. In addition to her successful collaboration with Kenji Mizoguchi, she worked with great filmmakers such as Ozu and Naruse.
