Elvira Notari (Italy)
Elvira Notari, born Maria Elvira Giuseppa Coda (Salerno, 10 February 1875 – Cava de' Tirreni, 17 December 1946), was the earliest and most prolific female film director in Italy. She made more than sixty feature films and around one hundred documentaries.
Her films are often based on forms of Neapolitan drama, such as the sceneggiata, and were shot on the streets of Naples with non-professional actors. Notari’s touch of realism has been linked to the later Neorealist movement.
