Sinopsis
Brittany, France, 1770. Marianne is a painter commissioned to create a wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse refuses to accept her fate as a married woman and refuses to pose, forcing Marianne to work in secret. To do so, she poses as Héloïse’s companion, observing her during the day and painting her at night. Their relationship grows more intense as they share Héloïse’s final moments of freedom before her wedding.
Céline Sciamma is a French director and screenwriter known for her films about identity, adolescence, gender, and human relationships. She studied screenwriting at the prestigious La Fémis film school in Paris. She made her directorial debut in 2007 with Water Lilies (Naissance des pieuvres). Her most notable films include Tomboy (2011), Girlhood (2014), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), and Petite Maman (2021). Her filmmaking is characterized by a sensitive and intimate approach, particularly to women’s experiences and emotions. In 2019, she won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, establishing herself as a major figure in contemporary French cinema.
