2024. Films by Women Madrid returns!


Films by Women Madrid returns from October 29th to November 10th, 2024, with a unique program at 19 venues across the capital

The seventh edition will present an exquisite selection of nearly 70 feature films from the national and international film scene.

Films by Women Madrid is an international feature film festival that has been held annually in Madrid since 2018. Its main goal is to promote equity and highlight the work and perspective of women in the film industry. The films directed by women that will be screened explore a wide variety of themes, styles, and cinematic genres, without falling into gender stereotypes, engaging all audiences.

Since its first edition, Films by Women Madrid festival has showcased premieres in Spain and Madrid of award-winning feature films recognized at renowned international festivals. We will have the opportunity to attend screenings of nearly 70 feature films, including fiction, animation, and documentaries, in 19 prestigious venues in central Madrid. Once again, a large part of the program will be available online on Filmin, and 8madrid TV will broadcast a film program by female authors.

In this seventh edition, a diverse selection of feature films produced in Austria, Belgium, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Romania, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, among others, will be screened, including Spain. 

Once again, Films by Women Madrid 2024 will award the Professional Career Award, honoring the professional career of a woman dedicated to the film industry, highlighting female role models from across the audiovisual sector, with the aim of rewriting history with an equity perspective. We will soon reveal who the honoree of this seventh edition is.

Festival Program:

Opening and Closing Galas -
Palacio de la Prensa

 The program for the seventh edition will feature several premieres, including the  opening gala on Tuesday, October 29th, and the closing gala on Saturday,
 November 9th; both will take place in the iconic venue Palacio de la Prensa.

Official Section:

International Competition - Cine Estudio del Círculo de Bellas Artes: 10 feature films

The 10 feature films, which are premieres in Madrid or Spain, produced between 2023 and 2024, will be part of the International Competition that will have a luxury jury in charge of selecting the film awarded the Best International Film Award of the Films by Women Madrid 2024. Chosen by the Festival selection committee, it is a golden opportunity to discover international titles recently released outside of Spain.

Spanish Competition - Sala Berlanga of the SGAE Foundation: 10 feature films

The jury, made up of 3 members of the Blogos de Oro Association, will award the Prize for the Best Spanish Film of Films by Women 2024, among the 10 feature films, produced in the last two years, that have been previously selected by the Festival selection committee.

Focus Austria: Academia de Cine, Cineteca Madrid and Thyssen-Bornemisza: 7 feature films

Focus 2024 section will be dedicated to the cinematography of Austrian women directors, in collaboration with the Foro Cultural Austria and Austrian Films. 

Six recent films will be screened between Academia de Cine and Cineteca Madrid, in addition to a special screening of the film Sleeping with a Tiger, at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza National.

International Panorama - Cineteca Madrid:
7 feature films

 Out of competition, in the International Panorama Section, a selection of seven  feature films by female directors of different nationalities will be screened.

 

Special Sessions: Several locations

Ciclo Pioneras: Cine Doré - Filmoteca Española.
Outstading female creator: Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Featured writer: Biblioteca Nacional de España.
Featured author: Sala Secuencia Sede DAMA.
Special sessions: Sala Berlanga.

 

Parallel Sections: Several collaborating venues

A wide selection of feature films directed by women will be screened at the other venues participating in the festival: Cines Verdi, Cinemateca Pedro Zerolo, Goethe-Institut Madrid, Casa Arabe Madrid, Institut Français de Madrid, Casa de América, Fundación Casa de México España and Sala Equis.

In addition, the two winning films of this edition, which will be announced during the closing gala on November 9th, will be screened in a double session at the Cinema Studio of the Círculo de Bellas Artes.

 

Professional and training activities:

Several venues: 7 activities

As every year, training activities in relation to the film industry will be scheduled, with the participation of relevant international and Spanish experts, at prominent collaborating cultural venues in the center of Madrid: Espacio Fundación Telefónica, DAMA headquarters, Cinemateca Pedro Zerolo, Fundación Casa de México en España, Assembly Hall of the Graduate School of the Camilo José Cela University and Casa de América.
