The Netherlands will be the guest country at the V edition of the Madrid Women's Film Festival, to be held from 25 October to 6 November 2022 in 20 venues

The 5th edition of Festival Cine por Mujeres will take place in Madrid from 25 October to 6 November 2022 in a mixed and multi-site format, in 20 cinemas, online at Filmin and on television at 8madrid TV, with a varied selection of recent national and international feature films.

To celebrate its first five years, and coinciding with the week of International Women's Day, Festival Cine por Mujeres has updated its image, now bilingual, in response to the internationalisation of the festival, which in the 2021 edition programmed films by Spanish directors at festivals in China and France. This update, carried out by the design studio El vivero, creators of our image, makes our brand more versatile and dynamic.

The Focus section of this 5th edition will be dedicated to the Netherlands with the intention of giving visibility to the talent and work of Dutch female directors and bringing their vision of the world to Spanish audiences.

Since 1911, when the actress and writer Caroline van Dommelen directed her first film, and since 1995, when Marleen Gorris won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, this European country has had internationally renowned festivals and markets such as Rotterdam and IDFA, as well as a film industry in which more and more professional women are making their way. The Focus Netherlands section will be dedicated to them, with the screening of 7 feature films produced in recent years and not commercially released in Spain or Madrid, which can be seen at the venues of Academia (Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) and at Cineteca Madrid.

This carefully selected programme has been produced with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Madrid and in collaboration with SEE NL, the organisation that promotes awareness and visibility of Dutch films around the world and works to improve their positioning in the international market.

In this new edition, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Madrid and Filmoteca Española will return as venues and we will have more than 10 specific sections in 20 venues, including the International Competition at the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Spanish Women Filmmakers Competition at the Sala Berlanga of Fundación SGAE - both with feature films competing for awards -, the festival will give special visibility in its sections to Arab, Chinese, French, Italian and Latin American, Mexican and Swedish women directors. In addition, there will be a section entitled "Outstanding Creators", in collaboration with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, where there will be screenings of art and artists.

The festival would like to thank the constant and reiterated support of the public and private entities that have bet on the project since its first edition in 2018, and that year after year bet on cinema and equality:

  • Consejería de Familia, Juventud y Política Social de la Comunidad de Madrid
  • Fundación Telefónica
  • Instituto de las Mujeres del Ministerio de Igualdad
  • Sidras Maeloc

We also hope that in this edition, as in previous years, Consejería de Cultura, Turismo y Deporte (Comunidad de Madrid), Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA) and Ayuntamiento de Madrid, will also join in.

Besides, we would like to thank the generous collaboration of the following organizations and companies: Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), Baturu Cultural Film Festival, Centro Cultural Coreano, Centro de Estudios Mexicanos UNAM-España, Embajada de Suecia, Fundación Consejo España-EEUU, Fundación SEUR, Swedish Institute, Chus Burés, Cinetools, Filmin, Free Your Mind, RC Service, Subtitula’m, Xiaomi España, Asociación Premios Blogos de Oro, CIMA (Asociación de Mujeres Cineastas y de Medios Audiovisuales) and Unión de Actores y Actrices.
