The film critic and writer Nuria Vidal will receive the Professional Career Award 2024 at the 7th Edition of Films by Women Madrid

Nuria Vidal, when she was named Honorary Member of the Academia del Cine Catalán in 2023.

The award will be presented on October 29th at the Inauguration Gala at the Palacio de la Prensa.

Every edition, Films by Women Madrid highlights the importance the work of professional women in the audiovisual sector with the aim of rewriting history in the key of equity. This recognition begins with knowledge focusing on the work of women throughout the film production chain: from creation and production, to distribution and promotion. A comprehensive approach encompasses all professions and stages of the film-making process.

In this 7th edition, the Festival selection committee awards for a professional career the film critic, writer and researcher Nuria Vidal, for her invaluable contribution to film criticism during 40 years, becoming an essential reference for cinematographic analysis in Spain.

Vidal has been a film critic uninterruptedly in different media since 1984, contributing his vision and knowledge through numerous articles, film essays, specialized magazines from various prestigious specialized media such as Fotogramas, Cinemanía, Nosferatu, among others, as well as in television programs such as Cinema 3 (TV3), Código Cine (Digital plus) or Ultima sessió (BTV).

She has been a regular presence on radio and television programs dedicated to cinema, where she shares her passion for film with a wider audience. Her ability to communicate in an accessible and passionate way has inspired many people to explore and appreciate cinema in all its forms.

As a culmination of her effort to give visibility to women filmmakers, in 2023 she co-founded, together with the journalist and film critic, Marta Armengou, Filmtopia, the first website in Spanish and Catalan, specialized in information on films made by women. This platform vindicates the talent of women in the film industry through various content, written and audiovisual, with current information, reviews, reports, interviews and historical review; offering a unique space.

Nuria Vidal has always been a fervent defender of women filmmakers, highlighting the work of directors, screenwriters and actresses, among other professionals who have made a difference in the industry.

Some of the figures Vidal has highlighted in her reviews include: Agnès Varda, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Lucrecia Martel, Anna Magnani, Penelope Cruz, Maribel Verdú, Isabel Coixet, Tilda Swinton, Pilar Miró, Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, Ketheryn Bigelow, Meryl Streep and many more.

Nuria Vidal, excerpts from the article Filmtopia: all the female cinematographic talent in one place (Fatogramas, Cine, Feminismo, Dec. 2023, Madrid).

“Film was invented over 120 years ago and women have been making it ever since. Despite the difficulties, they have been ignored in history. We want to highlight the contribution that women have made, make and continue to make in the history of cinema because there are more and more of them and there are also many people who consume and want to know more.”

Our interest is not only to explain the current situation in depth, but also the past of cinema, highlighting the pioneering female figures who have led the way and have remained invisible and, at the same time, also betting on new values and young talents, which are the future”.
