Animalia

Sinopsis

Young Itto (Oumaïma Barid) is heavily pregnant and has to adapt to the opulent life of her new family, so different from her humble rural origins. Her husband Amine (Mehdi Dehbi) is on a business trip when Itto has to face a mysterious state of emergency that is declared throughout the country.

Sofia Alaoui (France/Morocco)

Sofia Alaoui was born in Casablanca to a Moroccan father and a French mother and grew up between Morocco and China. After graduating from high school in Casablanca, she moved to Paris to study film. In 2017 she returned to Morocco to develop her own production company, Jiango Films. She has directed both documentary and fiction short films that have been selected in many festivals. Her short film “Qu'importe si les bêtes meurent” (“So What If the Goats Die”) was shot in the Atlas Mountains, with non-professional actors and exclusively using Tamazight, one of the most widely spoken Berber languages in Morocco. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, and the César for Best Fiction Short Film in 2021. She then directed a fantastic short film for 20th Century Fox, “The Lake”. Animalia is her first feature film.
